Installation of the patio door
Here is a step by step guide that you need to follow in order to install the patio door properly.
Step 1
In the rough opening, you have to test fit the door. Make any required adjustments from the inside. Make the door square and plumb by shimming as much as required.
Step 2
Make the brick mold around the perimeter of the door. In case you are planning to use vinyl siding you will need to add a little extra space to accommodate the pieces of channel trims that you will have to install between siding and brick mold.
Step 3
Use a circular saw and blade to cut along the line of the door and assure that it is set deep enough to cut through the siding. Near the ground and in the corners you may have to use a chisel. If you will remove the siding from this area it will allow the door to sit in recess against framing and sheathing. It will let the siding butt against sides of your brick mold.
Step 4
Have a piece of drip edge equal to the rough opening of the door. With the silicone caulk, you have to insert the drip edge into the rough opening between the siding and building paper.
Step 5
Take building paper and cut 8 to 10 inches strips. Insert these strips between the existing building paper and siding towards outside wall. Wrap its edges into the rough opening and use staple to keep building paper in its place against framing studs.
Step 6
Where siding meets the building paper, you have to apply silicone caulk around its edges. At the place where threshold will sit you have to apply liberal beads along its bottom.
Step 7
You have to install the door in the rough opening to assure that it sits square and plumb. If there is rough space between the door and frame, considering adding shims after every 6 inches to fill the space.
Step 8
After every 12 inches, you have to install shims at the top of the door and around its edges. Use additional shims if you have swing style door. You have to maintain the level of everything.
Step 9
Your brick mold should be flat against your framing lumber from outside. Use 10d finishing nails and pass them from the brick mold into the frame every 12 inches as well as in corners of the door frame. You have to countersink the heads of nails.
Step 10
Again, drive 10d nails from inside of the house towards outside with shims and in the framing. Again, countersink nails.
Step 11
Screw the threshold to the floor.
Test the door once you have installed it. Assure that you manage everything properly, so you will not have to deal with any issues.
